3 Tips For Improving Elgin Kids’ Attention Spans

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

Dundee immunization schedule

Hello Illinois parents! Today in the Elgin Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in Dundee.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the Algonquin, Elgin, and Dundee area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local Schaumburg libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

3 Easy Ways For Elgin Kids to Get More Antioxidants

Wednesday, December 4th, 2013

Dundee kids shot schedule

Because antioxidants are associated with cell damage and cell death, parents in the Dundee, Elgin, and Algonquin area often mistakenly assume that antioxidants are only important for adults and the elderly, those with more visible cell death and damage. But that simply isn’t the case. Everyone needs antioxidants for their health, even kids.

Antioxidants work their magic by protecting cells from free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of the normal metabolic processes that take place in everyone’s bodies (even kids!) all the time. Free radicals may also occur from pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, or when the body breaks down certain medicines.

Free radicals damage cells through oxidation. You might remember from chemistry class that this is the same process that causes an apple slice to turn brown. During oxidation in the cells, DNA can be damaged and changed, which can create the beginnings of disease. A chain reaction of damage can also occur with one damaged molecule becomes a free radical itself and then damages another, and so on.

Now that you know their importance, here are 3 great ways to get more antioxidants into your kids’ diets.

1. Get more veggies on their plates at dinner time and in their lunch boxes

2. Make fruit the snack of choice for your family

3. When buying processed snacks, choose those fortified with antioxidants.

Music is Magic for Elgin Kids

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

Dundee immunization schedule

Parents in and around Elgin know that healthy kids need proper nutrition, lots of exercise, and well-rounded lives. It’s also safe to say that for all children, a well-rounded life should include music in one form or another.

Studies have shown that music does so much more than simply entertain!

Did you know that children who are involved in some kind of musical training during school perform better in math and science? They also develop better coordination, do better in reading, concentrating, and goal setting. Studies show that students who are involved in a music education program also perform better on their SATs, and are more likely to attend college.

While it’s ideal for Algonquin, Elgin, and Dundee parents to start their kids young, it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. Music stores in the Schaumburg area will have great advice on age-appropriate music lessons and teachers for your curious child.

But lessons aren’t the only way! Keep an eye out in the Elgin community for musical events such as church, school, and community performance programs. Check with Algonquin, Elgin, and Dundee libraries, websites, and community centers for more information.

Keep up the good work, Elgin parents! Your children are lucky to have you to help them stay safe, healthy, and happy!

3 Critical Toy Safety Rules For Elgin Parents

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

Schaumburg childrens vitamins

Between holidays and birthdays, there are plenty of opportunities for gift giving in the Schaumburg area, so parents are often on the lookout for toys to give at the next big event. Toys can promote children’s health by stimulating the mind, encouraging imagination, or by getting kids moving around and exercising. But whatever toy you choose, make sure it is safe.

Next time you are browsing the toy aisle of your favorite Dundee, Elgin, or Algonquin department store, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Be sure that you purchase toys that suit the child’s age and abilities. Buying a toy that is meant for older children is a possible safety hazard and should always be avoided.

2. Once you’ve chosen an age-appropriate toy, read all of the enclosed instructions before allowing your kids to play with it.

3. This can be difficult when you have children of differing ages, but you should always make sure that older kids play with toys containing small parts away from younger children, and never allow them to leave the game pieces unattended.

And, speaking of gifts, remember that ribbons and strings should be taken away immediately after a gift or toy is unwrapped.

My name is Roselyn Whitmore and I am passionate about kids health in Dundee. I want to help parents in and around Schaumburg to raise healthy children and I do this by discussing important issues in my Children’s Health Blog, such as proper nutrition, immunization schedules, and safety.

Old-School Snacks For Schaumburg Kids

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013

Less Meat, More Plants For Healthier Dundee Kids

What does it take to make a healthy snack? The aisles at every Dundee, Elgin, and Algonquin grocery store are lined with packages that claim to be healthy and to contain the newest, most exciting vitamin or mineral. But is that really what makes a snack healthy?

Chances are that the answer is no. A lot of the foods that make healthy snacks are not the ones that you find packaged in the middle of the supermarket. Rather, they are what we would consider plain old food.

Plain old food has the advantage of being unprocessed and free of chemicals and preservatives. So, let’s take a look at these seemingly boring snack ingredients.

Cheese is a real protein powerhouse for your kids, so a little goes a long way. For a fun twist, try using cookie cutters to make shapes that your kids will love to gobble up!

Peanut butter and childhood go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly. Ants on a log, peanut butter spread on celery with raisins is always a fun treat. If your child has peanut allergies, you can always substitute almond butter in most recipes.

Low-fat yogurt is probably a favorite of your child’s already, but this versatile source of calcium has plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Try adding berries, or something crunchy like granola or whole-grain cereal. And, in the hot summer months, a yogurt pop can really hit the spot.

The humble egg isn’t just for breakfast anymore. Hard-boiled eggs kept in the fridge might be one of the most convenient ways to enjoy this high-protein snack.

As you can see, the secret to children’s nutrition might just be that there is no secret at all. Find real food, make it into a snack, and ignore the claims made by processed, pre-packaged food.

How Does Nature Make Dundee Kids Happier?

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013

Dundee kids shot schedule

Hello Elgin parents! Welcome the the Schaumburg Kid’s Health Blog. I’m sure most of you know how important it is for your kids health to spend time outdoors each and every day. But it may be even more important than you think.

Just like proper nutrition, immunizations, and vitamins, getting outside is essential for your child’s health.

One reason if for the natural light of the outdoors. This natural light keeps kids alert and healthy. Also, exposure to this light in the morning has a way of setting children’s internal clocks to promote better sleep and earlier bedtimes. (And what Algonquin parent doesn’t want earlier bedtimes?!) Another reason is that nature soothes and comforts children in safe, healthy ways. Studies have shown that children have better ability to focus with increased time outdoors. This will translate to more productive learning time as well as more tranquility in the home. Lastly, outdoor exercise is superior to indoor exercise because it promotes more physically vigorous play like jumping, running, and tumbling. These are all of the things that Elgin area parents are always telling their kids to stop doing in the living room!

Arrange your family’s schedule so that your children have time to explore the Elgin outdoors, and everyone will be better for it!

4 Things Your Elgin Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Dundee Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the Dundee, Elgin, and Algonquin areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the Elgin Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

My name is Roselyn Whitmore and I want to help Schaumburg families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity are often on my mind. I am the owner of a direct sales Schaumburg area home business that sells Power Squares.

Keeping Elgin Kids Regular

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013

Nutrition for Schaumburg children

It might be an awkward subject for Elgin parents to bring up with an older child, but making sure your son or daughter is having regular bowel movements is essential for their health – at all ages. If your child is experiencing problems with this, try these natural fixes before you resort to a medication.

Increased water intake is often all it takes for Schaumburg area kids to overcome this problem since dehydration is a common cause.

To encourage your child to drink more water, try getting them their own water bottle and keeping it full in the fridge. That way, even if your child is too small to reach the tap themselves, they always have easy access to cold water.

It’s important to evaluate the diet of your child and look for opportunities to introduce more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods contain the fiber that is necessary for bowel health. Plus, you’ll see lots of additional health benefits from these steps toward proper nutrition.

If natural remedies don’t alleviate the problem, consult with your Dundee, Elgin, or Algonquin pediatrician.

My name is Roselyn Whitmore and I want to help Elgin families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in Algonquin concern me. I also own a fantastic Schaumburg area home business that sells Power Squares and Power Squares.

Three Cheers For The Family Dog In Algonquin

Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

Three Cheers For The Family Dog In Algonquin

Algonquin parents want their children to be safe and healthy. Those of us in the 60123 zip code area spend a good chunk of income on keeping kids healthy: visits to Illinois pediatricians for well-child checkups; buying vitamins and medicines; and making sure they get enough exercise. Here is something that Illinois parents might not have thought of: having man’s (kid’s?) best friend in the home.

A group of Finnish researchers have recently found that parents reported fewer illnesses and less need for antibiotics for their babies where there was a dog in the household.

Benefits were also associated with cats, but not as much as with dogs – and especially dogs that spend much of their time outside.

The researchers are unclear exactly why a pet dog is linked to these health benefits. It could have something to do with the animal itself, or it could be the bacteria and germs they carry, giving just the right amount of exposure to infants to help create healthy intestinal flora and immune system.

Also, most participants in the study who had dogs lived in rural environments, and those without dogs lived in more urban settings, perhaps this has something to do with the study results as well. The Finnish study found the health benefits were evident with early exposure (during the first 12 months of life). On a side note, remember that dogs are not recommended for Algonquin people with asthma or respiratory issues.

Three cheers for the family dog or cat! (Well maybe just two cheers for cats.)

Thanks for visiting my Algonquin children’s health blog. Stay healthy, safe, and keep on being the great Schaumburg parents that our children deserve. To learn about my home based business selling Power Squares, a wonderful healthy snack, call me today.
